This September 15th, Yerba Buena Family Day is downtown San Francisco’s biggest daylong family block party with free admission to leading museums including the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Museum of the African Diaspora, and Children’s Creativity Museum, plus a huge array of special art activities for kids including SFMOMA Families on the Go and free performances on three big stages courtesy of Yerba Buena Gardens Festival.
Here at Yerba Buena Gardens Festival…
Esplanade Stage: 1–2:30pm
2013 Grammy winner LILA DOWNS and her phenomenal band bring a dramatic, unforgettable reinvention of traditional Mexican music and original compositions fused with blues, jazz, soul, African root, and even klezmer, all supporting her soaring voice. Downs is not afraid to shake things up with a cumbia rock, beat-poet style rap, or even the chirps of an iguana. The music defies categories, except to say that it is simultaneously edgy and powerful, yet sumptuous and graceful, rooted in the human condition, promising an emotional and memorable ride.
Children’s Garden Stage: Noon–3:30pm
Continuous family-friendly fun, featuring Chinese acrobatics by the Red Pandas, hambone body percussionist The Unique Derique, the hilarious Pi Clowns, Natasha Kaluza, Vanessa Vortex, Cathy Diebold, Marria Kee, Zachary Fischer, Gherkin Picklewater of the fabulous Picklewater Circus Hula Hoop Troupe.
Jessie Square Stage: Noon–3:30pm
Music from the great city of New Orleans by Chelle! & Friends, Latin American rhythms performed by the Venezuelan Music Project, and members of the fabulous Picklewater Circus Hula Hoop Troupe.
